My teacher in the art of landscape painting, Mr Alfred East A.R.A.
Autumn, Oil on Canvas, 60” x 40 1/4”, 1887
I should like to recommend a visit to the Alfred East Gallery in Kettering, Northamptonshire to see more of Mr East’s work. He turned away from the family shoemaking business to pursue a life as an artist studying in Glasgow and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Inspired by the Barbizon school and Corot he embraced naturalism in painting and was part of a group of artists seeking to bring about a new grand manner in British art with the coming of a new century.
